Q: how much should i expect to pay for a wedding cake?
I don’t want anything too fancy, just a simple three tier cake with just white icing on (because i want to use flowers to decorate the cake myself) The filling will be probably chocolate or vanilla sponge. I was also wondering what you think about the shape of cakes. round or square??? thank you!

A: round cakes are cheaper but square cakes cut up better for serving.

either way, you can expect to pay about 200 to 300 for a 3 tier cake which can serve about 100 people.

the cake will be cheaper than a decorated cake but still the price of wedding cakes is based on the size of the cake and then the cost of decorating it is added.

be sure you go to several bakeries and ask for samples of their wedding cake and their frostings so you can get the one that tastes best to you.

Q: How much did/will you pay for your wedding cake?
I was blessed to have a close childhood friend whose a professional cake decorator who did our cake. It served 200 people, 3 square tiers, raspberry filling and white chocolate buttercream icing. It had a row of lilies and orchids cascading down and around from the top to bottom. I remember there were lots of details like small silver beads (edible), swirls, swags in the icing. How much would I have paid for something like this?
The cake was free! My husband insisted on reimbursing her by giving her 15 personal training sessions.

A: This site is expensive.
But the average is about $2.50 per slice; then the filling (which is usually more) you’re talking upwards of $500.
Might be more considering where you live.
This was an AWESOME gift.

Q: How many finger foods for reception? Help?
We know we are doing finger foods and have quite a few options but i don’t know how many different things we need to have. We are having around 100 people. We will have like 5 desserts other than the wedding cake… chocolate fountain, cheese cake squares, brownies, ext. For the food we’ll have veggie, cheese, meat trays, and quite a few other things. is the normal like 10 different foods 20…. 30… what would be your guess thanks so much!

A: My friend did this and she had like 12 different things. I think you have an awful lot of desserts. You are probably paying a lot for your wedding cake, it would be a shame if people were too full of other desserts to eat some of it! I think my friend had plenty of variety, and she had around 100 people.

Q: What was you wedding cake like?
While I’ve been planning my own wedding, I’ve started to wonder what everyone else’s cake looked like? Or what you want your future cake to be like? What flavors did you use? The cake that we are planning is going to be 4 square layers with white frosting (or possibly fondant…) seperated by pink, yellow, and white roses with lace and pearl designs. We’re planning on the each layer being a different flavor, spice, chocolate with rasberry filling, white with lemon filling and red velvet.

It will be similar to this one. (not exactly obviously, but this is the picture that I showed the designer.)

If anyone has any photos of theirs of of their dream cake please post them, I’d love to see them! Thank you!

Here’s a picture of mine; it was delicious! The bottom layer was almond poppyseed with raspberry filling and the top two layers were italian cream cake with apricot-pineapple-rum filling. Cream cheese frosting. There was also a german chocolate groom’s cake that was a hit.
The cake you chose is beautiful! Beware of fondant icing- it is basically crisco and sugar and it tastes pretty awful.
White with lemon sounds so yummy as does red velvet. I wish I would have thought of the red velvet.

Q: What do you think of wedding themed Chocolate/ecru/copper/rust orange?
I am planning my wedding for summer 2009. I really like the chocolate look to it. However I dont want it to look too dark though. I found chocolate tableloths, and I was thinking of doing brown seatcovers OR white seat covers with brown ties. For the centrepieces I want to do small square yet semi-tall vases for abt 5 rust-orange roses tied with either orange or brown ribbon. For the bridesmaids i was thinking of doing brown cocktail typre dresses with rust-orange calla lillies and as for myself I will be wearing a champaigne/ivory coloured wedding gown and my bouquet will consists of 7 long stemmed large white calla lillies. My invivtations are simple in ecru coloured with calla lilies as border. I will be having a cake done by my friends mom who does this for living. I want a mocha flavour cake, with a thin chocolate spread over the entire care. This wedding is planned for 250 people.Could anyone give me their ideas..or any thoughts or changes that would be necessary? Thanks.

I was also thinking of doing an interesting design on my cake. Should I come up with something funky or leave it dark brown like the last one and professional?

Another thing that i was considering in regards to the chair covers, was to have a brown cover with an ivory bow. Once again, dont want to make it dark like a funeral, but contemporary. Does anyone have any ideas in regards to this?
Just so you know, this wedding will happen early june.

A: i like the brown tablecloths but if you can get the caterer to use a ecru overcloth maybe sometype of lace don’t forget it’s summer you don’t want too dark or heavy a feel or go with ecru table cloths and brown accessories please don’t use white calla lillies alone with an champagne dress does not photograph well calla lillies come in many colors now i would carry a mixed color calla lillie bouquet what color is husband to be wearing i hope his tux matches your gown with brown cumberbund etc 250 people alot of people 10 per table 25 centerpieces roses are expensive in the summer have you thought of gerber daisies cheaper and vibrant colors come in orange/red/yellow

Q: Recipe for chocolate fondant?
Okay new to this, what is a simple recipe for chocolate fondant?? And, pink fondant?

Trying to make bows, balls, flat polka dots and maybe spirals/swirls for decoration on a modern design wedding cake.

Plus any tips on how to make perfectly flat edges and corners (square cake) with the icing would be appreciated. And, tiers?? Dowel rods??

A: Your best bet is to buy ready to use fondant (from a bakery warehouses) add melted dark chocolate (room temp) and a bit of light corn syrup (so that its workable, use powdered sugar to keep it from sticking) you may need to add brown food coloring to make it brown. As for pink fondant…add light corn syrup and a hint of red food coloring (use powdered sugar to keep it from sticking) as for everything else, please feel free to email me…
I made this cake last summer!

waaaboow

Q: Is this a good variety for my dessert buffet for my june wedding?
I’m getting married on June 28th at 2pm. We’re having a fun, informal reception and because of the time frame we are having a big dessert spread in lieu of a full meal. This is what we have planned so far:

1. Wedding cake
2. red velvet cupcakes with white sugar topping
3. chocolate truffles
4. fruit tray
5. chocolate cake with peanut butter icing for groom’s cake
6. key lime pies
7. lemon pound cake-cut into small squares
8. 2 or 3 jars of candy-mints, m&ms, licorice..that sort of thing

What do you think? What would you add?

Also, we’re expecting around 120 folks. Do you think as in quantity that 200 cupcakes, 6 pound cakes (cut up), 6 key lime pies, etc is ok for that number of people?

Thnak you!
OOps, we’re also having a cookie tray with a variety of cookies!
the truffles for my BMs will not be the same at all.
flakes: i want a lot of variety, not just cake and candy. i know it does seem like a lot but i would rather have too much than too little.

A: I had a dessert buffet too! We had m&m’s, gummy bears, mints, a variety of chocolates and some chocolate covered nuts and then fruit and some regular nuts. That sounds like way too many cakes and cupcakes. Guests will normally have one or the other. I had the same amount of guests and we had 3 cheesecakes and then a flat cake and a table with everything else. There was plenty left over.

Q: Wedding cake – Is $468 reasonable with no decoration for 50 guests?
The restaurant I’m using for my ceremony & reception has an approved vendor list. I went to my cake tasting yesterday and it was fabulous! But, I’m asking for a very simple cake for 50 people. It will be 3 tiers. One 12″ square, one 8″ square and one 6″ round on top. It will be white cake with raspberry bavarian filling and the outside will be white chocolate fondant with a butter cream layer underneath. The only thing I’ve asked to be added are the “dot” edge details.

My florist will be decorating the cake himself with bombay orchids at the ceremony location since he’ll be there decorating anyway but I have to pay $75 extra for that (on top of $1000 in flowers already)

My price came to $468 with no details. Although they will deliver it for free and it will be added to my reception bill. Also, I won’t have any cake cutting fees for using that specific bakery. If I go with another bakery, I will have to pay $2 cutting fee per person to the restaurant.
She did say I would have leftovers and it would feed more like 72 people.

A: Yes it is reasonable. First you have a specialty filling. Then you have fondant which can be difficult to work with and is expensive. White chocolate fondant is the most expensive. It will probably cost the bakery nearly $100 or more just to purchase the fondant. Then there is all of the work in making, covering the cakes, stacking and supporting them, etc. If you are having “dot” edge details. Are the dots made of fondant? If so that will also take quite some labor to make. If you go to another bakery they will probably charge you the same amount or more plus you will have that $2 cutting fee pp. A cake of that size serves about 75 people (not including the top tier which you take home)I think the bakery is giving you more than a fair price actually. If you base it on 75 people it is $6.25 per serving (it would probably be closer to $4.00 per serving if you didn’t have white chocolate fondant). If you base it on the whole cake top layer included it is for about 90 people and then it is $5.20 per serving. You have to base the servings on how many people the cake can feed – not how many you are inviting to the party. It’s not a bad deal actually.

If you need to save money
1 – don’t order such a large cake if you don’t need to.
2. Go with buttercream or regular fondant instead of white chocolate fondant
3. Don’t use real orchids on the cake. Find a different flower or see what the bakery can do for you.

Q: Do you think this wedding cake would look cute or weird?
Ok, try to follow this, k? I don’t have a pic.

The layers are square, but the corners are cut straight(so it’s a square-ish octagon). These angled corners each have a lattice pattern made of itty bitty swiss dots. In each “diamond” this forms there is a flower. This is on every layer going up.
It’s 4 layers
Layer 1
draping over the facing sides. Under this is quilting with a swiss dot in each ‘corner’
Layer 2
alternating vertical rows of fresh fruit and white chocolate curls. This has a monogrammed ribbon wrapped around it.

in the middle is those pillars that bubble in the middle and a miniature functioning carousel on tier 2.
Layer 3
Alternated peach or lime wedges on the top & facing sides(so it kind of looks like a ’squiggle’) From between each facing wedge begins the top of a star made from mint leaves.
Layer 4
“I Love You written in lots of languages.
On the top top, instead of a statuette, is a tuft of white roses

What do you think of this?

A: Very unique! I like it. It’s your cake, you can make it look like whatever you want.

Q: I have binged everyday for over 2 weeks…is it too late to make a fresh start?
I used to be so healthy, eating very healthily NO junk food, and exercising regularly but for over 2 weeks now, i have been binging every single day, eating in one day almost an average person’s supply of food over a week.
Today for example i had:
2 bowls of muesli
4 slices of bread with a 2 bananas, raisins and strawberry jam
2 slabs of wedding cake
8 squares of white chocolate
chocolate eclair
chocolate cornetto
peanut cookies
strawberries
a salad (potato salad, coleslaw, watercress, cucumber etc.) Had 2 portions of salad today.
1 entire pizza
5 potato croquettes
2 oat and honey cereal bars
2 muller 5 a day yoghurts
i was wanting to make a fresh start tomorrow, start eating normally, No binging and no crap and going to the gym again….but its not too late is it? I can repair the damage caused can’t i?

A: No. It’s never too late. Just start tomorrow.

Q: Is my life ruined after what i have eaten today?
I feel so down. I had a serious binge today and i’m so upset. I have been binging in fact almost every day for the last couple of weeks and have gained a considerable amount of weight, though luckily i was underweight when i started binging but i feel so down especially when yesterday i managed to not binge for the whole day.
Today, i have eaten:
Several homemade peanut cookies
Strawberries
2 bowls of muesli (skimmed milk)
4 slices of wholemeal toast, with two bananas on top, with raisins and strawberry jam
an oats and honey cereal bar
a slab of wedding cake
half a tin of rice
8 squares of white chocolate
a salad (potato salad, coleslaw, watercress, cucumber, tomato)
a muller 5 a day yoghurt
oh god, it was so much and i haven’t even had dinner yet!! Is my life destroyed due to this terrific binge???

A: Yes you are completely ruined. You will wake up in the morning and will not be able to get out of bed because of all the weight you’ll put on over night!

Q: Will I still lose weight this week? PLEASE HELP. Diet follows, but some bits are bad…
Ok basically, it was my bday yesterday, so I ate BAD. Have worked out realistically what i’ll eat and drink this week and ate yesterday so wondering if i’ll lose weight.

A: i don’t want to lie here and tell you that your going to lose a remarkable 4 or 5lbs with that, so here’s the honest and true response. the most you could lose with that going on is .5 of a pound or an exact pound. it’s okay though. it’s your birthday so you can just cheat for those few days. but i suggest after that you must go back to a better diet plan and exercise routine.

Q: Anyone have any good ideas???
We are getting married next year…… we pretty much have everything figured out pretty quick (we just got engaged last monday :) ) so far we have a church, hall, invitations, caterer, photographer, bridal party, dresses, tuxes, colours (which by the way are chocolate brown and turquiose) and a cake. The only 2 things i am need of help with is centerpieces and guest favours. i want something unique but inexpensive.

i was originally going to do balloon centerpieces (3 ballons at varying heights) but then i got concerned about peoples kids……you know how when you go to a wedding and people give their kids the ballons to play with so they don’t have to deal with them? We are going to have an area set up with all kinds of toys for kids to play with and i guess this is the bridezilla coming out in me but how do you niceley ask someone to not destroy your centerpieces so their kids could play with the balloons when there is tons of toys to play with.

my other idea was for some sort of square glass centerpiece with either a candle or a floating gerbera daisy…. the problem there is i can’t find a place in my city that rents them and i’m not going to michaels to buy them for 24.99 a piece to give away at the end of the night……if they were 7 or 8 dollars sure….and what am i going to do with 30 square vases? hahaha.

i don’t even know what i want to do for favours……. i don’t want to spend alot of money but i would like something that looks nice….not cheap. i was thinking a few hershey kisses in a votive holder wrapped in tulle and ties with a ribbon……. thats the best idea i have so far.

do any of you out there have any neat affordable ideas for centerpieces and guest favours??? THANKS!

A: Hi and congratulations on your recent engagement!

First of all….take a breath! You don’t need to get everything done so quick!! Wow…you have lots done already.

Here are my ideas:

~ For the centerpieces……
Yes, I love the idea with the glass vase/bowl. But where are you getting the idea that they are $24.99? I used to work at Michaels (and still go there quite often). You can get these “ivy bowls” at Michaels at any time for $1/each:

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/bevfabriccrafts_2015_962683607

OR…they also sell these types of bowls for about $4/each:

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/bevfabriccrafts_2015_960485504

Then, put some turquoise “gem stones” in them:

http://www.save-on-crafts.com/vasgemmarsto.html

Note: You can get vase gems at Michaels also, but this company:
www.save-on-crafts.com has lots to choose from. They also have many different glass bowls also.

Then….float some candles in them and/or a gerbera daisy. The above company also has lots of floating candles. Maybe you could order everything you need from them.

BUT…if you do go to Michaels, ask for a coupon! They usually always have 40% off coupons (on a regular priced item). When I was buying things for my daughter’s wedding, I would go in each week and purchase something….or get 2 coupons and bring a friend! In no time you will have everything.

IF you can afford it, I would also suggest for you to put the glass bowls on a mirror. They have them at Michaels. You can get square, round, or oval. It just looks so pretty to have the added shine and it makes your centerpiece really elegant looking. These are sold in a package of 3 and they sell for $10/package. Again, go in each week and use a coupon!! OR…wait until they come on sale.

So…I think it would be very elegant to have a mirror tile, glass bowl with some vase gems and then a floating candle/gerbera daisy. Very pretty. You can even put out a few vase gems on the mirror tile too.

Really, even with the mirror tile, this whole centerpiece should only come to about $5-10/per table…depending on how expensive of a vase you buy.

~ For the favors:
I LOVE the idea with the Hershey Kisses. Truthfully, I would suggest to not even do them in the votive holder. Simply do them in the tulle and tie them with a silk ribbon. You can order personalized silk ribbon off of Ebay and/or “favor tags” that say “Thank you for sharing our special day.” I would just put the Hershey Kisses in the tulle circle (again available at Michaels), and forget the added expense of the votive holder. You can also put them in the nice little mesh bags like this:

http://www.save-on-crafts.com/favorbag.html

Hope this helps!

Q: is this enough food variety for a desert reception?
i went to my caterer today & she keeps giving me different answers, then i saw pictures of some of the events she’d catered & let’s say i was so not impressed, then when she said she’d never done a wedding before, i just canceled her. i live in a rural area so there is no other caterer around here.

but since it’s a desert reception mom said we could make it, i don’t work, i have taken culinary arts & catering classes in the past, my mom, my aunt & my mom’s best friend said they’d help too so this is what i have on the menu

lemon squares
mini strawberry cheesecakes
cookies
belgian mini cream puffs
mini eclairs
mini turtle cheesecake
chocolate brownies truffles
cupcakes (instead of cake)
gourmet brownies

with milk, desert wine, champagne, water & coffee to drink

what do you think? does that work out or do i need more variety,

milk is mainly for the 8 kids that will be there, the adults attending don’t drink pop, they are big coffee drinkers, my parents only drink water, his parents only drink wine & coffee, so we don’t really need soda, beer isn’t a good idea, his brother drinks beer like water.

thank you.
sorry i did forget fruit tray and a chocolate fountain, sorry
25 guests only sorry, and i’m planning 4 items for each guest, i’d rather have way too much than not enough
sorry i meant dessert, it kept coming up on the spell check, and i must have hit it to change it, sorry

A: Sounds pretty good to me ^_^
Something else you might enjoy are oreo truffles. Those things are so good, and (depending on size) they can garnish 70-140 little truffles. You can drizzle the chocolate to make them gourmet-ish too. They’re always a hit anywhere I go and take them.

http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/recipes/easy-oreo-truffles-95085.aspx

and don’t worry about the spelling, I get them mixed up too at times LoL(Sometimes I just say sweets/pastry bar:) We’re all human and have a few flubs ^_~
