Q: Why do so many brides skimp on a photographer?
I am a wedding photographer and have been doing it for 5 going on 6 years now. I see questions around here like “Should I just get a student?” Or “Should I hire a 15 year old with a NIkon D40 and takes pretty good photos!?”

NO! Do you know what a photographer has to do to prepare for a wedding!? Do you know how much thinking and skill goes into shooting a wedding?

Do you really want to hire a 15 year old who has not done a wedding, no back up equipment, no studio to process your photos, ect?

Sure, wedding photographers are expensive, but a lot of work goes into a wedding. After the wedding, the photographer has HOURS of post work to do. HOURS!

When brides ask me what I would ask when looking for a photographer for my own wedding I say this.

1. How many years of following have they done? You can’t just start advertising to do wedding photos if you have never shadowed one.

2. How big is your portfolio. If they don’t have at least 10 weddings under their belt, I would not go with them.

3. What is your equipment? If they are only shooting with a Nikon D40x. STAY AWAY! That is NOT a professional camera. It’s a PROSUMER camera! Sure I have one as a back up, but I mainly shoot with a Nikon D700 and D300. I would never take my D40 for serious shots of a wedding.

4. Packages. If they are offering to do it for $50 IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! You get what you pay for. Don’t cry when you can’t get anything larger than a 4×6.

I cannot stress enough to brides do not skimp on a photographer. These are photos you will have for a lifetime. If you want snapshots, then sure. Hire your neighbor who has a pretty nice looking camrea and takes really nice photos of flowers. Hire that high school student with a starter camera and no other lighting equipment.
If you want photographs, hire a photographer! Someone with a business card, website, clients you can talk with, and a studio! Even a studio in their home is a studio! If they are filing a Scedule C then they are serious about their work. If they report loss and profit, they are serious.

If you have a budget, skip on something else. Skip on flowers. Skip on the seven tier cake if you are only having 50 guests. Skip on specially made invitations that have ink from the first China Dynasty. Do not skip on your photographer because 9 times out of 10, the bride regrets it. You don’t even know how many times I get brides wanting to do do-overs of outside photos. They seriously get everyone dressed back up to recapture some shots. You can’t get the ceremony or reception back. Think about it.

That is my question/rant. Thank you
I do not have problems. I offer packages from $1200 to $4500. I am mostly talking about brides asking if they can hire someone who has never done a wedding and expect professional shots. It takes more than a “decent camera” to shoot a wedding.

A: I agree with you. Photography is the one thing that you will see/last forever. Photography is of uppermost importance as you never get that day back to do retakes. What is done is done on you wedding day.

Y spent $3600 on professional Photography (prints extra). It was worth every single penny. My shots are fantastic and I will cherish them forever.

If you do not chose your photgrapher wisely, brides will regret it forever.

When you buy cheap, you get cheap. I do not understand whuy brides complain later about dark pictures, fuzzy pictures etc. when they hired a friend or a student that doesn’t even have the propper equipment or knowledge of lighting.

Good luck
