Q: Single-tier Wedding Cakes?
I am having a small (around 65 guests) casual wedding and we’d rather not spend a ton of money on cake that no one is going to eat. We found a bakery that will do a large, beautifully decorated single tier for around $90, enough to serve everyone. We are going to have it sitting on an elevated cake stand for a “fancier” look. But I just wanted to see if anyone has done this at their wedding before, what did the guests think, was it cost-effective, and also how do you decorate a single tier without overwhelming the cake or looking too plain?
Thanks for everyone’s help, the pics really gave me some good ideas! I have checked into the small, two-tier idea but we really don’t care about having the top cake for our anniversary. Reason being, we are dead-set on a tres leches cake and in my experience, they do not freeze well.
A: My fiance’s uncle used to work for Byerly’s bakery so he plans on making our cake for our wedding. We believe that the cake is one of the things that takes a much bigger priority than it should. We are having a small tier cake and sheet cake for actual eating. Since your wedding is small, you could definitely do just the small tier cake.
Anyway his uncle taught us his secret: he is putting maybe one or two tiers of actual cake and a few tiers made out of cardboard underneath. Any professional should know how to do this.
I have asked around and many people don’t even care or remember what a cake looked like at a wedding. Don’t worry, save money for things like your honeymoon!
Q: Size of a wedding cake topper?
The top tier of our 3-tiered wedding cake is 6 inches in diameter. We would like a single-letter monogram as our cake topper. What size should we get so that it doesn’t look too big or too small on the top of the cake?
A: About 5″ tall is considered right for a 6″ top tier. Go a lot taller than that and you could have a top-heavy look, is the thinking, but a topper that’s only 4″ tall can be dwarfed by a 6″ wide tier. Most cake topper designers do plan for standard top tier sizes such as 4″ and 6″ diameters, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding the right size.
Q: What’s your wedding cake?
I just went to my cake tasting today and decided on a vanilla bean pound cake with butter cream frosting and Bavarian cream filling. I’m just curious to know what you decided to go with.
Mine is a single tier lavender cake, with red twine decorating the bottom of the tier and as a cake topper some twine wrapped around a plum colored flower.
Post pictures if you want.
A: well… i can tell you that i am not totally pleased with my cake… my future mother in law is having our cake made for us… that was great!! we picked the design we wanted and she found someone to make it for us at a great price…. but just yesterday my fiance’ says to me… oh yea, my mom called and asked what flavors of cakes we wanted… i asked him what he told her, he said…. vanilla, chocolate and strawberry…. ok.. picture this… caribbean blue icing over pink cake… yuk!!! and over vanilla cake!!! this is not going to be very attractive and very boring… after more investigating ( calling his mom ) the cake has already been ordered because she asked him that about 2 weeks ago….. deep sigh….

Q: What do you think of this wedding cake idea?
This is the wedding cake I’m thinking of, but 1. I don’t know if it would look good aesthetically, and 2. I don’t know how hard or easy it would be to make…
It’s an Independence Day wedding(next year, lol), so I was thinking 5 equal sized tiers, separated by short glass cylinders with white flowers in them. The layers would be star-shaped, but each one slightly skewed, so that the overall effect looks like a star column that got twisted. Three layers(1,3, & 5) would be white with a blue ribbon around the base and pearl blue swiss dots, and two layers(2 & 4) would be blue with a white ribbon around the base and pearl white swiss dots. Since it’s nearly impossible to find a star-shaped cake stand let alone one with equal sizing for all tiers, lol…in each crevice of the star formation would sit a single red rose…but only on four sides. Along one side, down the entire length of the cake would be a spread of white roses.
What do you think of this cake? Does it sound ok?………
How hard or easy does it seem to make? Any suggestions?
Thanks. (=
A: It sounds hard to make. Maybe you should just pay a shop to make it for you xD
Oh God, I thought it was going to be some crappy tacky idea but your idea sounds pretty good.
Q: Is a red velvet cake ok for the groom?
The bride’s cake will be a three-tiered white cake. Will it be ok to have a red velvet groom’s cake with cream cheese icing? Either a large single layer or two-tiered. Or will the white color of the groom’s cake clash with the bride’s white cake?
I’ve never had a red velvet cake with chocolate icing before. And red velvet is the groom’s favorite cake, and he insists on having it at the wedding.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.
A: They shouldn’t clash at all. This is one of those things the bride freaks out about and guests don’t notice at all.
If you are truly worried then have the cake tables in different areas of the room. Nobody is going to take their two slices and go “hmmm…..she doesn’t match!”
Q: Formal reception decorations…?
I am having a very formal wedding, black, red and white with all candle lighting. I’m having a four tier cake and I was thinking about incorporating my and my fiance’s little saying (“I love you more than the number of stars in the sky”) into our cake. But then I got the idea to do star decorations. Like maybe star confetti on the table (not lots of it) and maybe some star cutouts hanging from the ceiling. Would this still look okay for such a formal wedding? I would like to incorporate the stars somehow, but not quite sure what to do. We are having a single red rose with clear crystals in a vase on a round mirror surrounded by tea light or votive candles for our centerpieces, so I thought maybe the silver star confetti used sparingly wouldn’t be too bad… I’m not sure how I am going to incorporate the quote into our cake, but I’m thinking about having it written on the bottom tier with stars all over the cake. Nothing will be overdone if the stars are used because I know that can make the difference between nice looking and tacky… Please, any advice would be helpful. *I’m not changing my mind about using the stars somehow; I just need ideas to do so so that it doesn’t clash with the formalization of the reception.
A: The star confetti on the table wouldn’t de-formalize (if that’s even a word) your wedding, although I’d stay away from hanging stars from the ceiling, unless they’re made with fabric or some type of sparkling material. I’d ask your bakery where you got the cake if they can write the saying in a beautiful cursive and float the words so that they don’t look so deliberate in a straight line around the cake and ask them to add edible glitter to the cake. You could also decorate the cake table, dj booth, bars with some twinkle lights covered with tulle to simulate stars twinkling in the sky. Best of Luck!
